FDA has approved a drug, Finpecia, for treatment of male pattern baldness. The approval will help patients afford their medications.
The drug works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is responsible for hair loss. DHT is known to cause male pattern baldness. Finpecia is a generic version of Propecia, a popular medication used to treat male pattern baldness.
“The approval of Finpecia offers a unique opportunity for patients to offer affordable and effective treatment for male pattern baldness,” said Dr. Thomas Nelson, the CEO of Medivation Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Finpecia is the first medication to be FDA-approved for treatment of male pattern baldness. In November, the FDA approved the first-ever clinical trial for this treatment option.
This study compared Finpecia to finasteride, the first oral medication approved to treat androgenetic alopecia. The results of the study were published in the January 2017 edition of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
About 6,000 men between the ages of 18 and 41 who had male pattern baldness were randomly assigned to receive either finasteride (generic Propecia®) or placebo. The study’s design included a 1-week washout period and a 6-week period of treatment. In the treatment period, finasteride was started at a dose of 50mg twice a day for 1 week, and then increased to the same dose every 6 weeks until the results showed no further improvement.
Finpecia was also started at a dose of 100mg once a day for 1 week, and then increased every 6 weeks until the results showed no further improvement. Finpecia (finasteride) was stopped at this dose, and then continued at the dose of 100mg once a day for 6 weeks.
The treatment period for finasteride was extended to 1 year after the drug was launched, and continued for 1 year. This study showed no further benefit, with the mean hair loss in men who received finasteride was only slightly greater than the mean hair loss in men who received placebo.
The study was funded by the Merck & Co. Inc. company and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Centre for the Research on Dermatology.
Dr. Nelson said the approval of Finpecia represents a significant milestone in the fight against hair loss. He said patients who were interested in finasteride were hopeful that the drug will help them regain their lost hair.
“It’s important for patients to continue to take the medication as prescribed by their doctors, even after they have seen improvements in their hair loss,” he said.
Finasteride is also the first oral medication to be FDA-approved for treatment of male pattern baldness. The drug works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is known to cause hair loss.
A previous study of 553 men with mild-to-moderate male pattern baldness found that Finpecia resulted in significantly greater hair growth than placebo. The researchers noted that the drug’s effectiveness was sustained during treatment. However, they noted that the study did not look at the individual results of treatment.
Finpecia can be prescribed at a lower dose, and patients can find out more about the treatment options.
FDA-Approved Drug For Treatment of Male Pattern Baldness (AANAP)FDA Approval of Finasteride for Treatment of Male Pattern Baldness (AANAP)FDA approval is based on an assessment of the following criteria:
A study of 990 men who were initially treated with finasteride for 12 months found that 66% of men experienced a significant reduction in hair loss over time.
Finasteride is an oral drug, and patients can take it orally for 1 to 3 months to see if it helps. The results show that treatment was effective in preventing hair loss for 86% of patients.
Finpecia(Finpecia)
Brand Name(s):Finpecia, Finax, Finax Pro, Finpecia
How It Works
Finpecia works by blocking the action of a chemical messenger, finasteride. This inhibits the activity of a number of enzymes that produce and break down dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that is responsible for the symptoms of prostate enlargement.
Finasteride
is used to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men. Finasteride works by reducing DHT levels in the scalp which, in turn, helps to reduce hair loss and promote hair growth in those who have male pattern baldness. It is not effective in treating any other forms of hair loss.
Warning
Some medicines used to treat depression may cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure when taken in combination with Finasteride. If you are taking any of the following drugs combine with Finasteride to create a potentially serious drop in blood pressure, you should see a doctor immediately:
How to Use
You should take one tablet of Finasteride 1 mg tablets in the morning, then one tablet of Finpecia 1 mg tablets in the evening before going to bed. Finasteride works best when taken in the morning. You should also be careful not to exceed the recommended dosage of Finpecia 1 mg tablets.
You should not take more than one tablet in a day.
Side Effects
Finpecia can cause side effects, although they are rare.
Finpecia is an oral medication used to treat male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) and to prevent further hair loss on the crown and in the middle of the scalp. The active ingredient is finasteride, a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor.
Finpecia is prescribed to treat the symptoms of male pattern baldness, such as the receding hairline, a receding hairline, and thinning of the scalp. It works by blocking an enzyme known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is responsible for the miniaturization of hair follicles on the scalp. By blocking DHT, finasteride helps to slow down the progression of hair loss and promote new hair growth. Studies have shown that finasteride can also be used to treat enlarged prostates. However, this medication is not without potential side effects. The most common side effects include decreased sex drive and decreased ejaculation volume, which can be particularly pronounced in those who take higher doses.
There are also some serious side effects associated with finasteride use: decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculatory disorders. More serious side effects are more common in patients with an enlarged prostate, enlarged breasts, or those taking medication for high blood pressure. These side effects are usually temporary and resolve on their own over time. However, if the side effects persist or worsen, or you are concerned about them, talk to your doctor. They can help you safely and effectively manage these side effects.
